About the Bay Area Skeptics
The Bay Area Skeptics organization encourages critical thinking and accuracy in the media and in our schools. We encourage the use of rational thought and scientific methodology in examining claims of any sort, but we are especially concerned about claims of the paranormal, pseudoscience, and untested or poorly tested medical and psychotherapeutic practices.
Bay Area Skeptics was founded in June 1982 as the first “local interest group” inspired by the Center for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), now known as the Center for Scientific Inquiry (CSI). Although we have overlapping interests with CSI, BAS is independent of all other groups. BAS is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
BAS presents free monthly “SkepTalks,” monthly social gatherings, and partners with other skeptics organizations to present the annual SkeptiCal Convention. These events are supported by membership dues in partnership with Patreon.
BAS is governed by a self-selecting Board of Directors. For more information on the board, click here.
